Survey Shows Grim Economic Expectations

Now, a recent survey names the place that gets some of the most pessimistic economic projections.

Eunice Yoon tells us about some who see their glasses half empty and others that see it as half full.

With so many people losing their jobs and companies going bankrupt, it's difficult not to feel glum.

Grant Thornton, a London accounting firm, conducted a survey of private businesses in 36 countries.

The report found that business executives living in this financial capital are more downbeat about their economic future, even more downer

than Americans or Brits whose economies are also in recession.

The firm says Hong Kongers are feeling particularly vulnerable

because two pillars of the city's economy, trade and banking, have turned sour.

Hong Kong is very much export-driven and driven by the financial services industry.

So if you're in a worldwide recession, then of course exports would get hit, which is one of Hong Kong's major contributors.

And then you've got, you know, also the financial services industry and we all know the problems in the financial services industry.

Hong Kong isn't even the worst of the negative Nellies among Asian economies.

Taiwan and Thailand received low marks, and Japan the most depressed of all.

Apparently exporters there, who had hoped that they could rely on China's growth to counter slower U.S. and European sales,

are turning skeptical about the Chinese market, too.

Indians though are positive about their economy, ranking number one among the optimists.

The Chinese are also hopeful and they just fight concerns from outside of China about their country's growth in 2009.

Hong Kong is considered China's gateway to the world

but the city's role as a hub for global trade and finance exposes it to dramatic swings and sentiment.

Only a year ago, according to the survey, people here were still wildly confident about the economy.

Though even Lunar New Year celebrations aren't helping to boost confidence though,

every year a local politician visits a Taoist temple to draw a fortune stick to predict the future of Hong Kong,

and for 2009 the year of the ox, the politician apparently pulled the unluckiest stick.

Fortune tellers say this ill-omen stick shows that Hong Kong won't be able to isolate itself from the global economic turbulence,

but these fortune tellers are still urging people to put on a brave face.

최근 한 경제 전망 설문조사서에서 비관적 전망을 받은 나라들이 거명되었는데요.

유니스 윤 특파원이 (경제 전망이) 낙관적인 국가들과 비관적인 국가들을 보도합니다.

많은 사람들이 직장을 잃고 기업들은 부도가 나는 가운데, 낙담하지 않기란 쉽지 않습니다.

런던의 회계 법인 그랜트 손튼은 세계 36개국의 민간 기업들을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시했는데요.

이 보고서에 따르면, 세계 금융의 중심지인 이곳 홍콩의 경영인들은 자국의 경제 전망에 대해 더욱 비관적이며 의기소침해 있다고 합니다.

마찬가지로 경제 침체를 겪고 있는 미국이나 영국 경영인들 보다도 말이죠.

손튼 사에 따르면, 홍콩 주민들은 특히 더 위기 의식을 느끼고 있다고 합니다.

홍콩 경제의 양축인 무역과 은행업이 어려움을 겪고 있기 때문에 말입니다.

홍콩 경제는 수출에 매우 집중되어 있고, 금융 서비스업이 원동력입니다.

그렇기 때문에 세계 경기가 침체되면 당연히 홍콩 경제의 주요 공헌축의 하나인 수출이 타격을 받게 됩니다.

그리고 금융 서비스 산업 또한, 우리 모두 알다시피, 어려움이 많습니다.

아시아 주요 경제국 가운데 홍콩이 최악이라고는 할 수 없습니다.

대만과 태국도 낮은 점수를 받았고, 그 중 일본이 가장 비관적입니다.

미국과 유럽 지역에서의 매출부진을 만회하기 위해 중국의 경제 성장에 기대고자 희망했던 수출업체들이

중국 시장에 대해서도 회의적이 된 것 같습니다.

하지만 인도 국민들은 자국 경제에 대해 낙관적이며, 낙관적인 국가들 중에서도 첫 번째인 것으로 손꼽히고 있습니다.

중국인들 또한 희망적이며, 2009년 중국의 성장에 대한 다른 국가들의 우려에 맞서 싸우고 있습니다.

홍콩은 세계로 나아가는 중국의 관문으로 여겨지지만,

전세계 무역 및 금융 중심지로서의 역할로 인해 거센 동요와 위기를 맞고 있습니다.

불과 일년 전 설문조사에서 홍콩 주민들은 자국 경제에 대해 굳게 확신하고 있었다고 합니다.

심지어 춘절 연휴마저도 경기 회복에 대한 자신감을 높이지는 못했습니다.

해마다 홍콩 정치인은 도교 사원을 찾아가 국가의 한 해 운세를 점치는 점괘를 뽑곤 하는데,

2009년 기축년 운세로 최악의 점괘를 뽑은 것 같습니다.

점술가들은 이러한 불길한 점괘가 홍콩 역시 세계적인 경제 혼란에서 결코 자유로울 수 없다는 것을 보여준다고 하면서도,

그래도 용기를 잃지 말라고 격려하고 있습니다.
