Doctors Use Stem Cells for First Trachea Transplant

In medical news, an incredible breakthrough has one woman breathing a great deal easier.

Her doctors were able to grow her: a new windpipe after hers sustained terrible damage.

Here's CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta reporting on how they did it.

Behind every medical breakthrough, there is a story,

and you are looking at one:

30-year-old Claudia Castillo, playing with her kids.

She is proof that stem cells can make a difference.

Just a few months ago, a scene like this would have been impossible.

Her lungs and trachea were badly damaged by a terrible bout with tuberculosis.

Look here: critical narrowings, not enough air getting into her lungs.

So, her doctors decided to build her a new airway, using adult stem cells taken from her bone marrow,

not from the embryonic stem cells that cause so much controversy.

It has never been done before in a human.

The jump between animal investigation and human investigation was a big sort of mystery to me as well,

but we succeeded.

Take a look at this:

Doctors took a donor trachea from a 51-year-old who had died.

For six weeks, they methodically stripped away all the cells, leaving just a matrix, or scaffolding.

Then slowly, they began to build up a new trachea,

using Claudia's stem cells and cells from a healthy part of her trachea.

The transplant was next;

rare shots inside the operating room.

Four days after her transplant,

doctors said Claudia's windpipe was almost indistinguishable from a healthy patient's.

Today, she has no complications and no signs of rejecting the transplanted tissue.

It's a long process,

but 4 months after they operated on me, it's much better.

I'm fine now.

Doctors say they hope their success will open doors for future transplants to be performed,

and to help even more patients like Claudia return to normal lives.

그녀는 줄기세포가 어떤 변화를 가져다 줄 수 있는지 보여주는 산증인입니다.

몇 달 전만 해도 이와 같은 광경이 벌어지는 것은 불가능했을 겁니다.

그녀의 폐와 기관지는 결핵을 심하게 앓아 큰 손상을 입었었죠.

여기 사진을 보십시오. 아슬아슬하게 좁아진 기관(氣管) 때문에 그녀의 폐는 충분한 공기를 공급받을 수 없었습니다.

그래서 의사들은 그녀의 골수에서 채취한 성체줄기세포를 이용해 새로운 기도(氣道)를 배양하기로 결정했습니다.

수많은 논란을 불러일으킨 배아줄기세포를 이용하지 않고서 말입니다.

이는 인체에서는 처음으로 시도된 일이었죠.

동물 연구와 인간 연구 사이의 간극은 저도 예측할 수 없었죠.

하지만 결국 성공했습니다.

의료진은 사망한 51세의 남성으로부터 기증받은 기관을 떼어낸 후,

6주 동안 결체조직관만 남긴 채 모든 세포를 차례로 제거했습니다.

여기에 천천히 새로운 기관을 배양하기 시작했습니다.

클라우디아의 줄기세포와 그녀의 기관 내 건강한 부분의 세포를 이용해서 말입니다.

그 다음 단계로 이식이 진행되었습니다.

수술실 안에서는 유례없는 도전이 이루어졌죠.

이식 수술 4일 후,

의료진은 클라우디아의 기관지가 정상적인 환자의 것과 거의 구별할 수 없을 정도가 되었다고 밝혔습니다.

현재 그녀는 합병증이나 장기 이식된 조직에 대한 아무런 거부 반응도 보이지 않고 있습니다.

긴 과정이죠.

하지만 수술 받은 지 네 달이 지나니까 몸이 훨씬 좋아졌어요.

전 이제 괜찮아요.

의료진은 그들의 성공이 앞으로 행해질 장기 이식 수술에 새로운 길을 열어주기를 희망하고 있습니다.
