My special guest is Alec Baldwin.

You might recognize him from Emmy Award winning role on "30 Rock" or his numerous appearances on "Saturday Night Live".

And now, his mug is on bookshelves.

He's the author of "A Promise to Ourselves: A Journey Through Fatherhood and Divorce".

We'll talk about that and lots more tonight.

You know, you have such a great career going on right now.

And yet every time I see you or I read about you,

you say, "I can't take it anymore, I'm sick of it and I'm getting out of the business."

Why do you want to quit?

I think you just... you can't do the same thing all the time. / But it's different all the time. You do theater ...

You do movies. / Well...maybe I would do that. / Television.

But I think that...I think that doing things that are very public gets to be tough.

I mean I've done this for a living since 1980.

I did my first job on a soap opera.

And I've done it.

And the other difference for me...at least it feels like it's different is... I've worked a lot.

A lot of people get a lot of breaks and they take time off

and they make a lot of money and they go and travel

and they...you know, they go to...and I don't do that.

Tell me about your time with "Saturday Night Live".

Why do they keep asking you back, because you're funny?

I enjoy it. I enjoy doing it.

I think that you know, we were talking before

about how...you know, off camera you and I were talking about,

like, how do you make that kind of decision to do this kind of show?

Like how did they find you to do "The View"? How did that happen?

I was doing a freebie for Milton Berle's birthday party, and Barbara was there.

She didn't laugh at anything. Everyone else did.

One time I did an audition for Lorne Michaels, and he didn't laugh either.

He said, I said what he said that was very funny.

And I said, "You didn't laugh."

And he said, "I don't want you to think you got the job." / Now, was "The View" already on the air? / When I didn't get the job.

Was "The View" already on the air with Barbara

or they were casting the show originally? / No, they were in the process of it. / You were in the original cast?

Me and Star Jones, Meredith Vieira, Debbie Matenopoulos, we clicked. / Right.

But it's changed, as you can see.

So anyway what about Lorne Michaels, do you like working with him?

The thing is that, you know, Lorne is someone who...

there are people who are very smart, as you know a lot of people in this business.

And then there are people who are smart in a way that's useful in this business.

I mean some people in this business are smart, but it doesn't translate into anything in this business.

I'm interested also to go... just go back to family life when you were growing up on Long Island, with all those kids around.

It's like a thing of the past, that sort of Irish Catholic family.

A lot of kids... the Italians did it.

They don't do it anymore either.

As I say sometimes... I think I wrote this in the book about my dad.

I said I came from one of the last generations where people had a big family on faith.

They were going to find the money and they were going to find a way to raise all their kids.

You know, my dad was someone who was a very hard-working guy.

He was a really tough guy.

He had four sons and he had no money.

So some of the people we grew up with.

Do you want to have a big family? You still have time to have a big family? / No, I don't. I'm 50.

So what?

I would love to get married again. I would love to have more kids.

See.

If that happened, that would be great.

I love kids. I love their lack of pretension.

I love kids. The more I'm in this business, the more I love kids.

오늘 모신 특별 게스트는 알렉 볼드윈 씨입니다.

에미상을 수상한 <30 록>의 주인공이나, <새터데이 나이트 라이브>의 출연자로서 널리 알려지셨죠.

요즘엔 이 분의 얼굴을 서점에서도 볼 수 있습니다.

그는 <자신에게 하는 약속: 부권과 이혼의 여정>이라는 책을 펴냈는데요.

오늘밤 이 책에 대한 것과 그 밖에 많은 이야기들을 나누어 보겠습니다.

요즘 볼드윈 씨는 제 2의 전성기를 누리고 계신데요,

그런데도 볼드윈 씨를 볼 때마다, 혹은 볼드윈 씨에 대한 기사를 읽어보면

항상, '더 이상 못 참겠어, 지겨워, 관둬야지' 같은 말씀만 하신단 말이에요.

왜 그만두고 싶어 하시죠?

그냥... 항상 똑같은 일만 할 순 없으니까요. / 하지만 항상 다른 일들을 하시잖아요. 어떤 때는 연극을 했다가...

영화도 했다가... / 그 일은 앞으로도 할 것 같아요. / 텔레비전에도 나오시고.

하지만 저는... 대중에게 보여지는 일을 한다는 것이 힘들 수밖에 없는 것 같습니다.

전 1980년도부터 이 일이 생업이었습니다.

멜로드라마에 출연한 것이 제가 처음으로 한 일이었어요.

지금까지 연예계 일을 계속 하고 있고요.

남들과 다른 점이 있다면... 적어도 제가 느끼기엔 다른데요... 제가 일을 아주 많이 해왔다는 겁니다.

많은 사람들이 종종 재충전기를 갖고, 휴가도 가고

또 돈을 많이 벌어서 여행도 다니고,

사람들은... 그러니까, 돌아다니잖아요. 그런데 전 그러질 못해요.

<새터데이 나이트 라이브>에 출연했던 얘기 좀 들려 주세요.

그 프로그램은 왜 계속해서 볼드윈 씨에게 출연요청을 하죠? 볼드윈 씨가 재미있기 때문인가요?

저는 즐거운 마음으로 출연하고 있어요. 그 프로그램에 출연하는 것이 즐겁습니다.

전에도 우리 둘이 얘기한 적이 있는 것 같은데...

녹화 중간 쉬는 시간에, 우리끼리 그런 얘기를 했었죠.

이런 쇼 프로그램을 하기로 결정한 때는 어떤 과정을 거치는지 말이에요.

어떻게 <더 뷰>의 진행자로 베하 씨를 발탁했을까, 그런 일이 어떻게 일어났을까... 뭐 이런 거요.

제 경우는 전에, 밀튼 벌 씨의 생일 축하 파티 때 제가 찬조 출연을 했는데, 그때 바바라 씨가 그 자리에 있었어요.

그녀는 제 코미디에 전혀 웃지 않았어요. 다른 사람들은 모두 웃었는데 말이죠.

언젠가 한번은 론 마이클스의 프로그램 오디션을 봤는데 그 분도 전혀 웃질 않는 거예요.

그런데 이건 그가 말한 건데요, 나중에 제 코미디가 아주 웃겼다고 말하더라고요.

그래서 제가, "그때 전혀 안 웃으셨잖아요"라고 했더니

그 분 말씀이 제가 오디션을 통과했다고 생각하기를 원치 않았다는 거예요. / 그때 <더 뷰>가 이미 방송되고 있었나요? / 제가 떨어질지도 모르니까 말이에요.

바바라 씨가 이미 <더 뷰>를 진행하고 있었나요?

아니면 진행자들을 물색중이었나요? / 아뇨, 당시는 준비 중이었어요. / 베하 씨는 처음 캐스팅 된 멤버 중 하나였나요?

저와 스타 존스, 메레디스 비에이라와 데비 메이트노풀로스, 이렇게 우리는 죽이 잘 맞았어요. / 그렇군요.

지금은 보시다시피 많이 바뀌었죠.

그건 그렇고 론 마이클스는 어때요? 그분과 함께 일하는 것이 좋은가요?

론이라는 사람은…

아시다시피, 이 바닥에는 머리 좋은 사람들이 많잖아요.

연예계 쪽으로 머리가 잘 돌아가는 사람들이 있죠.

연예계에 있는 사람들 중에는 똑똑하기는 해도 이쪽 분야에서는 그다지 통용되지 못하기도 하잖아요.

이번에는 볼드윈 씨의 가족에 대한 얘기가 궁금한데요. 롱 아일랜드에서 그 많은 꼬마들과 뛰어 놀며 살던 얘기요.

일종의 옛날 이야기, 아일랜드계 가톨릭 집안 얘기 같은 거요.

많은 아이들과...이탈리아계 집안도 그랬었죠.

요즘은 누구도 그렇게 살지 않지만요.

제가 가끔 얘기하지만… 책에서도 아버지에 대한 부분에서 이 얘기를 썼던 것 같은데요.

저는 대가족을 당연시 여겼던 마지막 세대에 태어났다고 말했죠.

그 세대의 사람들은 돈벌러 나가서 자기 자식들을 모두 먹여 살릴 방법을 찾았습니다.

우리 아버지는 아주 열심히 일하는 분이셨어요.

그리고 정말로 강인한 사나이셨습니다.

아들은 넷이나 되는데, 돈은 별로 없었어요.

그래서 우리는 모르는 사람들과 함께 지내기도 했죠.

볼드윈 씨도 대가족을 원하시나요? 그러기에 아직 늦지 않은 것 같은데요. / 아뇨, 제가 지금 쉰 살입니다.

그게 어때서요?

다시 결혼하고 싶긴해요. 아이들이 더 있었으면 좋겠어요.

그것 보세요.

그렇게만 되면 바랄 나위 없겠죠.

전 아이들을 좋아해요. 아이들은 꾸밈이 없어서 좋아요.

전 아이들을 매우 좋아합니다. 이 분야에 오래 있을수록 아이들이 더 좋아져요.
