U.S. Performs First Near-total Face Transplant

In Ohio, a team of doctors advances the evolution of a medical breakthrough.

The United States' first face transplant was successfully completed during a marathon surgery in the last two weeks.

Senior medical correspondent Elizabeth Cowen has this incredible story.

We have finally did it.

Her doctors call it "the first surgery of its kind."

A near total face transplant was performed less than two weeks ago at the Cleveland clinic.

I must tell you how happy she was,

when with both her hands she could go over her face and feel that she has a nose, that she has a jaw

and she has a full face in front of her.

In a breakthrough 22 hour surgery, surgeons transplanted 80% of her face.

From a cadaver came skin, facial muscles and nerves, lower eyelids, cheekbones, upper jaw, blood vessels, arteries.

The patient will never look like him or her self

and the patient will never look like a donor or recipient.

The identity of the patient is being kept a secret,

but we do know she suffered from severe trauma several years ago.

And as a result is blind in her right eye,

she couldn't smell or taste and had trouble speaking.

Her sibling says in a statement:

"We never thought for a moment that our sister would ever have a chance of a normal life again, after the trauma she endured."

In the coming weeks she will have intense physical therapy.

Doctors estimate it will take three to six months before her nerve endings regenerate

and her face will begin to feel and work like her own.

2주 전 장시간에 걸친 수술 끝에 미국에서는 최초로 안면 이식 수술이 성공적으로 끝났는데요,

지미오나우 박사 팀은 이번 수술이 사상 최초의 획기적인 것이었다고 말합니다.

클리블랜드 병원에서 안면의 거의 전체를 이식하는 수술이 이루어진 것은 불과 약 2주 전의 일입니다.

수술을 받은 여성 환자가 얼마나 행복해했는지 모릅니다.

두 손으로 얼굴을 더듬어 보면서 코도 있고 아래턱도 있는

온전한 얼굴이 되었다는 걸 알고는 말이죠.

22시간에 걸친 수술 끝에 외과 의료진은 여성 환자의 얼굴 80%를 이식했습니다.

얼굴 피부, 안면근육 및 신경, 아랫쪽 눈꺼풀, 광대뼈, 턱 윗부분, 그리고 안면혈관과 동맥까지 기증자의 신체로부터 이식되었습니다.

수술을 받은 환자의 얼굴은 자신의 본래 모습이나 기증자의 모습과는 다를 겁니다.

(안면이식 수술을 받았다고 해서) 기증자의 얼굴을 갖게 되는 것도, 환자의 예전 얼굴을 다시 찾는 것도 아닙니다.

환자의 신원은 비밀에 부쳐지고 있습니다.

하지만 환자가 몇 년 전 심한 외상을 입었다는 사실은 분명합니다.

사고로 오른쪽 눈을 실명했습니다.

후각과 미각도 잃었고, 말을 하는 데에도 장애가 생겼습니다.

환자의 한 형제는

“그런 부상을 겪은 후 동생이 다시 정상적인 삶을 찾게 될 기회가 오리라고는 전혀 생각지 못했다.”라고 진술했습니다.

앞으로 몇 주간 이 환자는 집중적인 물리 치료를 받게 됩니다.

의료진에 따르면 환자의 신경말단이 재생되려면 3개월에서 6개월의 시간이 필요할 거라고 합니다.

그러고 나면 그녀의 얼굴은 감각을 되찾고 자신의 얼굴처럼 되겠죠.
