Makeup Artist & Cosmetics CEO, Bobbi Brown

Bobbi Brown may be known for her popular line of makeup products, or bestselling books,

but to a growing army of women she's also part fashion consultant, part talent agent.

I've been involved with Dress for Success since 2001.

When I heard... I went to one of their breakfasts

and I heard, you know, some amazing stories and great speakers,

and I sat there listening and I just said "You know what, I want to be here. I want to help."

You know, the things that I do for my customers are the same things I could do for these women.

And help them really, you know, get confidence, feel good about themselves, and get back to work.

Woman like Zoe Shepard, who first got help back in 2002.

Tell me how you met when you first met.

I first met Bobbi Brown when I was chosen to do a photo shoot for Dress Barn,

for an upcoming fund-raiser that Dress for Success was having.

And you were looking for a job at that point?

At that point I was in-between jobs,

so it was really quite a break to be able to help out the organization

that assisted me getting on my feet.

Bobbie Brown's involvement in Dress for Success is hardly skin-deep.

They say in seven years she's raised more than $1.5 million for the cause;

and supplies each woman with a Bobbi Brown starter-kit.

DFS now has more than 80 affiliates world-wide.

I think that a lot of women have such worry about how they're going to pay the bills,

how they're going to, you know, support their kids, how they're going to eat;

they don't think about themselves.

They don't think about, you know, what they're eating, they don't think about their clothes, their makeup.

It's the last thing on their plates.

So, when we are teaching these women that in order you're... we're tough,

us women are tough, we are tougher than the men.

And you know what? We are... actually have, you know, the ability to make ourselves feel good.

We can go out and help ourselves and help the people around us.

I think it's always the intimidation factor that, that I don't know what to do,

and I'm not sure I can afford to do this, that would be the big stumbling blocks, no?

No, definitely. I mean you want... you want to know that you can do it quickly,

that you have the products in your hand and you just want to really make you feel good.

That is really the secret for all women.

You know, there's a lot of people right now who are looking for jobs

and so, you know, it's very important

to make sure that when you walk in the door that people see the real you.

저는 2001년부터 '성공을 위한 옷입기'에 참여해왔습니다.

'성공을 위한 옷입기' 조찬 모임에 한 번 참석했다가

놀라운 이야기들과 훌륭하신 분들의 말씀을 듣게 됐죠.

거기 앉아 이야기를 듣던 중 "저도 이곳의 일원이 되어 돕고 싶습니다."라고 말했어요.

제가 고객들을 위해서 하고 있는 일들이 바로 제가 이 여성들에게 해줄 수 있는 일들입니다.

여성들이 자신감을 갖고, 스스로를 사랑하며, 재취업할 수 있도록 돕는 거죠.

조이 셰퍼드라는 여성은 2002년 처음으로 이 재단의 도움을 받았습니다.

두 분이 처음 만났던 당시 이야기를 해주세요.

제가 처음 바비 브라운 씨를 만난 것은 제가 '드레스 반'의 촬영 모델로 선정되었을 때였죠.

드레스 반은 '성공을 위한 옷입기' 모금 행사를 준비 중이었습니다.

그 당시 구직활동 중이셨나요?

그 당시 저는 일을 쉬고 있었기 때문에

운 좋게도 이 재단을 도울 수 있었고

이로써 저도 자립할 수 있었던 것이지요.

바비 브라운은 '성공을 위한 옷입기'에 시늉만으로 참여하고 있는 것이 아닙니다.

7년동안 바비 브라운이 모은 기금만도 150만 달러가 넘고,

(모금에 참여한) 모든 여성들에게 바비 브라운 초보자용 메이크업 세트를 제공했다고 합니다.

'성공을 위한 옷입기'는 현재 전세계적으로 80여 개 지부를 두고 있습니다.

많은 여성들이 고민하는 것은 각종 요금들을 납부하는 돈 문제라든가,

어떻게 아이들을 양육할지, 어떻게 먹고 살지에 대한 거예요.

정작 자기 자신에 대해서는 관심을 기울이지 못하는 것 같습니다.

여성들은 자신이 먹을 것, 자신이 입는 의상이나 메이크업에 대해서는 신경쓰지 못하죠.

그런 것은 가장 뒷전이 되고 말아요.

그래서 우리는 이런 여성들에게 우리가 강하다는 것을 가르쳐주고 있습니다.

우리 여성들은 강합니다. 우리는 남자보다 강합니다.

왜냐고요? 우리는 스스로 기분이 좋아지는 법을 알고 있습니다.

밖으로 나가서 우리 자신과 우리 이웃들을 도울 수 있으니까요.

저는 무엇을 해야 할 지 모른다는 것이 항상 위협 요소인 것 같습니다.

또한 이런걸 할만한 여유가 있는지 확신하지 못하는 것도 큰 방해 요소가 되겠지요. 그렇지 않습니까?

절대 그렇지 않습니다. 오랜 시간을 들이지 않고도 할 수 있다는 걸 아셨으면 좋겠네요.

제품을 손에 쥐고 기분이 좋아지길 바라기만 하면 됩니다.

그것이 바로 모든 여성들의 비밀이죠.

현재 많은 사람들이 일자리를 찾고 있습니다.

그러니까 이건 매우 중요합니다.

문으로 걸어 들어갈 때 사람들이 당신의 본모습을 확실히 볼 수 있도록 하는 것은 말입니다.
